Woe To The Preacher

“Woe to the preacher who - from laziness and fear of hard work, or fear of people, or desire to please people, or desire for fame, or because he spends time on other things (whether from passion for other occupations or greed or ambition) - does not plan his sermons according to the text and the needs of his listeners but according to how he can most easily talk for a while without special preparation, shake something out of his sleeve, and take care of this obligation without effort - or according to how he can give the least offense or be the most pleasing and brilliant ‘pulpit orator!’”
C.F.W. Walther, Pastoral Theology, 61
